pulaski part 3 november 2009

Well what can I say about this final trip for me this year to Pulaski NY. When i left phila to head north i was expecting to have some fun and fish, but this trip turned into one of my most memorable adventures of the year. I like the drive its just far and well worth it this time. I hit the river with Jeff and looked forward to the mild Pulaski weather and the water levels being prime for indicator fishing for steelhead. Like many other outings to Pulaski in steelhead season douglaston is always a great place to start, according to whitakers there was fresh fish coming in daily. Well after being socked for $30 bucks for my day pass we headed down to the Joss Hole. This spot is truely one of my favorites on the river and always is a challenge. We had the hole basically to ourselves and fished it pretty hard. I managed to land six domestic rainbows and after no major hook ups decided to eat and check out Altmar. When we got to the Altmar bridge we had it pretty much to ourselves and the managed to hook up over 25 time with steelhead and brownies in about 3 hours. The fishing was on world class and the fish were falling pry to the dead drift of nymphs ranging from the bead head and the czech mate nymphs . The amount of quality fish in the river was amazing with a mix of fresh and heavily colored fish present. My Buddie Jeff hooked two decent size brownies best being close to 8 lbs and a few steelies mixed in. My day ended with with me landing 6 trout down in the Joss Hole, 5 or 6 landed steelhead and 2 brown trout and a total of about 15 solid hook ups. The next day was pretty much the same we headed for the lower fly stretch and managed to be the only two there at first light and with in the hour managed to hook up pretty consistently with steelhead and brownies once again. after about 25-30 combined hook up and at least 10 more fish landed we called it quited and head down below the bridge and and Jeff hooked into a decent fish right on the other side of the Altmar bridge. We headed down to the unemployment line i manage one more hook up with a real nice steelhead but lost him on a head shake and a run done stream, jeff hooked up one last time too and it was time to head back to Phila. What a great trip this river is a great place to fish one the condition are prime and we hit it right in the middle of prime steelhead adventures.

truckin through new york

left early early for Pulaski NY with intentions of hooking into the fish they call king. It Pulaski indeed with arm to arm rippers even in the lower fly stretch. the salmon fishing was intense with hook up after hook up ending in getting spooled and fish breaking free. after dealing with gale force winds and countless amounts lots flies finally i managed to pick up a nice rainbow on the swing. after the hearing the water level was going up i Headed for Rochester for the first time. in the mourning i searched for sandy creek. found it and then to oak orchard. both creeks were low, sandy creek looked like the letort gin clear and barely moving. i did see a few pods of salmon but didn't fish there at all. once i got to oak it was a mess. pods and pods of kings and even more people fishing. all around a good trip north but could have been better. oak orchard has real potential if there wasnt so many people snagging fish.

Clarks Creek Revisted 6/23

Headed back to Clark's Creek with two pals and had a pretty good day. the fishing wasn't as good as last week but still good overall. the heat was up on Clark's and the fish responded by remaining elusive and very picky. i believe we totaled out at ten fish with a few being real gems. fun day with Clark's creek ... everything else is still brown and high the susquhanna river looks like liquid mud and looks like smallmouth bass are gonna continue to get a breaks from fisherman.

Back form the road

Got back today after spending most of the last 24hrs in a car, i also managed to travel pretty much the entire distance of the pa turnpike. Fishing was good most of the water i was trying to fish was completely blownout but i have my spots and they both paid off. the breeches and vurnable clarks creek. i hit the breeches yesterday for about an hour only one fish but it was a classic "run" fish big with coloring(brownie). Clarks creek i hit early am much to my surprise there was somebody there at 6:30 this morning but that didnt stop the fish, 6 fish in less then 2hrs. not bad.

Phish show was great cool scene but horrible traffic, the band sounded great and a surprise walk away played made this an all time classic... Help clean up lot with the Green Team, cool peoples ...

The Yellow Breeches

Fished the Breeches with my buddie Mel. had a great day the weather for the most part was good but still enough chill in the air to keep the action from breaking loose. hatches look like they are just starting on the Breeches, alittle bit of everything today. some caddis and craneflies, bwo and even a few brown stone flies. Melby started out great with two fish in the run right out of the shoot. headed down stream to allenberry to check out the scene down there with no luck headed back up stream and found some surface activity and caught a few fish. tan caddis worked the caddis and cranefly started around 3:330 and lasted about a hour. i landed a sweet native brownie on 16 tab caddis emerger and mel got his first trout of the year on dry fly. not a great day for total amount of fishes caught but a great day on the screen total fish six.

Clarks Creek

Fishing today was stellar, i trekked out to Clarks Creek with one of my fishing pals J.R.. Its been a while since i have been to Clarks close to a year. Expecting the BWO and close range fishing tactics Clarks Creek produced the first 20+ fish day of the year. At first fishing started out alittle slow, but things soon changed. Clarks was teeming with trout. not only a 20 + fish day but gland slam of trout twice. Brownies, Rainbows and Brook trout today on dries, nymphs and streamers. What a great day: weather was clear cool and sunny, water was gin clear and cold and the fishing was a blast. The best day of the season with a total of 12 trout landed for me and about 15 total hook ups, my pal J.R. posted a 10 + fish day proudly sported his 6ft 3wt. Great day cant wait till my next trip to clarks hopefully soon....

The run at Boiling springs

today i ventered west to fish the Yellow Beeches. Four fish today, and i earned them.
the first fish was a 3 in stream bred brownie, hit olive nypmh size 18. net was a foot long rainbow on the same fly. early season olive works best here. next color will be bronze will cover sulfur and light cahill. next two fish were quick hooked beefy rainbow on the bridge hole on olive bead headed glass caddis, first fish landed second fish on and off. last fish was in the same spot first two came from. switched tecniques went to longer rod for better drift it paid off with nerf shape rainbow. good day today weather was nice but stream was low and clear. hopefully next trip the caddis will show up..
